Mr. Scherman

Mr. Scherman was known as a songwriter, and record producer that lived in Sun City, California. During his career, he owned 5 of his own record companies. He has an incredible list of musicians he wrote and produced records for including Nat “King” Cole, Shelly Manne, Frankie Lane, Art Pepper, Merle Travis, Bull Moose Johnson, Grandpa Jones, Wynonnie Harris as well as a long list of many other remarkable artists. Scherman felt so passionately about the music he said “Music keeps me young. It’s one of those things that got in my blood and I couldn’t get it out”. His love for music encouraged him to jump back into the music business at the age of 70. Scherman worked with artists in jazz, country, pop, and rhythm-and-blues.

Nat “King” Cole’s first billboard chart hit song, “All for You” was written and produced by Mr. Scherman in 1943. Capitol Records bought the rights from him as the song continued to climb the charts. Other songs from Cole included “Got a Penny”, “My Lips Remember Your Kisses”, and “Let’s Pretend”. He started his career at ASCAP as a representative, later working on a cruise ship as a pianist. His ear for music allowed him to recruit many artists helping them transform into top-selling musicians.

Scherman’s daughter, Carol Dofflemyer, has been instrumental in keeping the works of her late father in the music scene alive and still continues to be an important character in the resurgence of his work.

In 2017 Resnik Music Group acquired the catalogue to help continue to raise the awareness of Scherman. Resnik Music Group is honored to keep the pioneer Robert Scherman’s work alive and allow generations to remember his remarkable talent. It is inspiring seeing Mr. Scherman’s passion for writing and producing music. People remember him for his great works “Melancholy Madeline”, “Shufflin’ Boogie”, and “Maureen”.
